Proficiency Exam
The Graduate Program in Biochemistry establishes, through this document, the guidelines for the foreign language proficiency exam.
The Proficiency Exam is mandatory and aims to assess the graduate student’s ability to understand, interpret, and write scientific texts in English.
Master’s and Doctoral students must present a proficiency certificate or declaration in English by the end of their second semester in the program.
The Doctoral Proficiency Exam may be validated from the Master’s program, provided that it is within the 2-year validity period.
The following will be accepted as proof of proficiency in English:
- A certificate issued by the Casas de Cultura at UFC or other official public institutions, as long as the final grade is 7.0 or higher and the certificate is within the 2-year validity period.
- Certificates or declarations without a score will not be accepted.
- For international students, declarations or certificates from international institutions that confirm proficiency in writing, reading, and interpreting the English language will also be accepted, provided they are valid for up to 2 years.
- Certificates or declarations from international institutions that conduct English proficiency exams, such as Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), will also be accepted, as long as they are within the 2-year validity period.
Any cases not covered in this document will be reviewed by the Program Coordination.
