About PPG-Biochemistry

Graduate Program in Biochemistry (PPG-Biochemistry) – UFC

The Graduate Program in Biochemistry (PPG-Biochemistry) at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) is a recognized leader in academic and scientific excellence. Affiliated with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the program has over 50 years of history, offering Master’s and PhD courses to train highly qualified professionals in teaching and research.

Program Objectives

The primary goal of PPG-Biochemistry is to train professionals capable of working in basic and higher education while also conducting high-level scientific research. Students are prepared to obtain Master’s and PhD degrees in Biochemistry, with strong encouragement for producing innovative research of national and international relevance.

Additionally, the program promotes the continuous development of its faculty, encouraging postdoctoral internships and fostering technological innovation. This approach strengthens PPG-Biochemistry’s status as a program of excellence.

Program Structure

PPG-Biochemistry offers:

  • Master’s in Biochemistry: training professionals to design and develop scientific projects and work in higher education.
  • PhD in Biochemistry: advanced training for conducting original and independent research, including skills in writing scientific articles and projects.

History and Research Focus

Founded in 1971 with the creation of the Master’s program, PPG-Biochemistry expanded its scope in 1993 by incorporating the PhD program.

The program has a strong focus on research in Plant Biochemistry, particularly involving plants and marine algae from Brazil’s northeastern region, exploring biochemical and physiological aspects as well as biotechnological applications.

Research Areas

PPG-Biochemistry is structured into three major research areas:

  • Plant Biochemistry
  • Plant Molecular Biology
  • Plant Physiology

Within these areas, the main research lines include:

✅ Biochemistry and biotechnological applications of plant and algae biomolecules
✅ Molecular, Structural, and Functional Biology of plants
✅ Plant Physiology and Biochemistry related to environmental stresses

Integration with Undergraduate Studies

PPG-Biochemistry maintains a strong connection with the undergraduate Biotechnology program at UFC, established in 2010. Faculty members also teach in various undergraduate programs, such as Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, Food Engineering, and others.

Additionally, the program actively contributes to academic training by mentoring undergraduate students in scientific initiation and teaching assistantships, strengthening the synergy between undergraduate and graduate education.

Recognition and Scientific Impact

With a solid tradition and a strong commitment to innovation, PPG-Biochemistry stands out for its high-quality training, the impact of its research, and its contribution to the development of new technologies. The program is recognized as a reference in Brazil and internationally.
